This is a really great little device. For years the USB Hot Plate has been around, allowing you to keep your tea or coffee warm while you work. With the ease of use and access to Microwaves, that product was little more than a novelty.
The Cool It Chiller however will cool your drink down to around 45°F (7°C) and hold it at that temperature while it sits right next to your computer. If Refrigerators were as fast as Microwaves, this product wouldn’t be of much use. Refrigerators aren’t and so the Cool It Chiller has found a niche problem that it fixes wonderfully.
The Cool It Chiller uses Thermoelectric Cooling (TEC) technology (in the form of a Peltier Device) to cool the metal surface your beverage sits on. It is powered by any consumer product with a standard powered USB Port (PC, Mac, XBox 360, PS2, et cetera). However it would be a good idea for it to be attached to one of the primary USB ports or to a powered USB hub as the unit will need the full power that USB port can supply. The Peltier device is cooled by a small fan under the Cool It Chiller to keep the unit functioning properly.

Does it really work?

I bought this about a year ago and I honesty can''t say if it works or not. Sure it gets cold, but it doesn''t keep a beer at that nice "fresh from the fridge" temp. If it was something like $15 to $20 I''d say if you want to get it go ahead, but this isn''t worth $40 for a flashy coaster that get all sorts of little dings from the ribbed bottom of bottles. Even better is if you get a lot of condensation from a drink on it, it goes straight through the unit and pools onto your desk. It looks cool, but it''s not worth it unless you live without A/C.
