If the fan holds up...

This little known cooler is fantastic when working properly. After lapping the base, (it wasn''t terrible to start with), this cooler is about as good as air gets. One huge problem..the fan has an odd base, so it is very hard to mount any other brand fan if this one dies...and mine did after a month or so it started making a ticking sound. I took it apart and noticed the blades are very close to the fins, in fact they were barely hitting them, so I made 2 extension plates and moved the fan up about 1/8" higher, problem solved..about a week later I heard the same freaking noise again so I removed the heatsink and saw the fan hub was cracked, I''ve been in injection molding for over 20 years and either they have a cold flow line in the hub area, or they are pressing in the magnetic strip very tightly and fracturing the hub area. I pinched it back together and superglued it for a quick fix until I could fit or get a new fan. I decided to e-mail SilenX about the problem and they were very quick to respond (and very nice too). They said the problem I had was uncommon and sent me a new "updated" fan for the shipping price of $6. So far so good. This thing is great! On a n E6420@ 3.2ghz 28idle, 44full load. Keep in mind I keep my house cool and have an extremely well cooled case.
